There are occasions when you may want to operate your camera remotely ( wildlife photography is a common example). Cameras can be operated remotely by simple remote control of the shutter or more elaborately by computers or mobile phones. The connections can be wired or wireless. Shutter speed, aperture and focus can all be adjusted and the image seen in live view, the image may be taken directly from the computer or phone. Remote control can also be used for focus stacking and is valuable for macrophotography.
The operation of cameras can also be triggered by sensors which respond to external stimuli for example: sound, motion, lightening, breaking a light beam and so on.
Brendon will discuss and demonstrate remote operation and triggering of Canon and Sony cameras and a dedicated (and cheap) wildlife camera. The demonstration will include third party devices that add additional capability.
Brendon will show examples of wildlife photos taken with these systems.

In tune with the Club’s historic year where we as a Club have gone back through our history, evaluating how we have grown and changed with the times, Ian Simpson has suggested that each person bring two video’s to the Meeting.
Both video’s should be ones that you are proud of; one video should have been made a number of years ago and the other just recently produced.
The idea is to evaluate and discuss each member’s progress and perhaps take the discussion further as to what the Movie Makers either as a Group, or as individuals, would like to do next year as well as in future years at the Club.
Craig’s “Flash Workshop” will cover the basics of using a Speedlite and Craig will demonstrate how he uses one for Family Photo projects. Craig will be using Canon gear, however, all of what he will talk about can be done with any brand and is applicable beyond Family photos.
The Workshop will cover :
- Basics of Light
- Basics of Flash
- Exposure Options
- On-Camera direct fill flash
- On-Camera bounce flash
- Off-Camera flash (this will be a brief 10 minutes)
- The use of diffusers/light modifiers
- Speedlite settings (brief overview)
A follow up Workshop will be run in March 2020 along the lines of “Getting to know your Speedlite”
Note : Entry into the “End of Year” judging is not compulsory. You may enter prints and EDI’s from images that you have entered during the 2019 year.
If entering Prints, this will be the final night for collection of your Prints.
Entry Requirements are : One only print in each Section, i.e. Colour and/or Monochrome and one only EDI Entry.
Location : Forest Road Hurstville – mostly in the one way area past Westfield and the train station.
Activity : Parade, Lion dance, food stalls, Dragon dance
Transport : 8.40 am Sydney Train from Wollongong – 3rd carriage from the end.
Extra gear to take : Poncho or umbrella in case of rain, Water. Protection for camera, lenses etc.
Meet at the Canteen in the ‘southwest’ corner by 6.00 pm. If you arrive late, make sure that you locate Kaz and sign on.
What to take : Tripod, Remote, Torch, extra charged battery, water and of course, your Camera and SD cards.
Skills : Panning and capturing movement with difficult light conditions.

The Photo Group’s first meeting to be held on Tuesday 11th February.
This will be a very interesting meeting because our Guest Speaker for the evening is our Club’s long time friend Roy Killen who has many, many letters following his name, some of which are…. EFIAP (Excellence award, International Federation of Photographic Arts), GMPSA (Grand Masters award, Photographic Society of America), GMAPS (Grand Masters award, Australian Photographic Society), APSEM (Australian Photographic Society Exhibitors Medal); I could go on, but there are too many to mention.
Roy is a wonderful photographer and his main interest is “nature/wildlife” photography. Roy will be doing a presentation on “Nature Photography” and you will have the opportunity to see and hear about the techniques he uses, the photographic equipment he carries and hopefully get some valuable insight into what is required when photographing nature or wildlife.
Roy will also be giving us some tips on how to maximise our chances of success in competitions.
Meet at Car Park at Lakeside Reserve for sign-in at 8.00 am.
What to take :
Sunscreen, Hat, Insect Repellent, Water and anything else that would help you to stay cool and comfortable whilst walking and photographing.
The photo opportunities will take in bird photography, therefore a fast lens would definitely help.

What to Wear : Gum Boots if it has been raining. If not, closed in boots/shoes suitable for rough terrain. A fluoro vest is compulsory.

A “Black & White Night” walking loop including Wollongong’s shore area. An opportunity to see our surroundings without colour; a different perspective from the norm … “Let’s get creative” !
